Document organizer

A document organizer for the whole family.

IDs, bills, policies and certificates in categories and folders. Find any of them by name or ID number, on your phone.

DocIt's documents screen with sample documents sorted into categories such as Financial, Identity, Legal and Medical, a search bar and a Warranties shortcut

DocIt is a document organizer app for Android. It keeps your important documents in categories and folders on your phone, marks whose each one is, and finds any of them when you search by name, type, ID number or description. You don't need an account, and the files are encrypted on this phone.

If your documents live in a plastic file at home, a gallery full of photos and old WhatsApp chats, finding a PAN number or last year's policy means searching all three. An organizer gives each document one home and one way to find it.

How to organize your documents in DocIt

  1. Add the document. Scan it with the camera (up to 20 pages become one PDF), import a photo or PDF you already have, or share it into DocIt from another app.
  2. Check what DocIt read. It reads the page on your phone and suggests a name and a type, plus the number and expiry date when it finds them. Fix anything that's wrong.
  3. Pick a category and, if you like, a folder. You can make a new folder from the same screen.
  4. Say whose it is (DocIt Plus). If you add family members with DocIt Plus, DocIt asks whose each document is before it saves.
  5. Save. The file is encrypted on the phone. You can move it to another folder later from the document's page.

Categories and folders

DocIt starts you with eleven categories: Identity, Financial, Bills, Medical, Education, Travel, Legal, Corporate, Vehicle, Notes & study, and Others. Each category shows how many documents it holds and how many are due.

Inside a category you can add folders up to three levels deep. For example, Financial, then Home loan, then 2026 statements. Or Vehicle, then the car's name, then Service bills. Search finds anything the folders don't.

Notes & study is for things that don't expire, like class notes. Documents there stay out of reminders.

One phone, the whole family's documents

If you look after documents for parents, a spouse or children, DocIt Plus lets you mark each document with whose it is, so your father's pension documents don't get mixed up with your own. Everything still lives on your one phone. DocIt doesn't sync between family members' phones.

Find a document by name or number

The search bar looks at four things you saved: the name, the type, the ID number and the description. Type "passport", a few digits of a policy number, or a word you put in the description, and the document shows up.

Search doesn't read every word inside the document. If you want to find something by a word, put that word in the name or description when you save it.

You also get Favourites, Recents, a View all list of every document, and a Warranties screen that sorts your bills into Active, Expiring and Expired. Your ID numbers, once saved, sit in a wallet on the home screen where you can copy them in a tap.

A tidy collection still has gaps. In India, DocIt shows the 9 documents most Indian families need and which ones you still have to add. In the US, UK, Canada and Australia it shows the 6 key documents. Our important documents checklist explains what to keep and where.

Documents with an end date show a status: Valid, Expiring (the last 30 days) or Renew now. Turn reminders on and your phone reminds you 30, 7 and 1 day before the date.

What DocIt doesn't do

Before you start

Scanning a stack of documents goes faster with good light and a flat surface. Our guide on how to scan documents with your Android phone has the tips. If some documents came as loose photos, the free online tools can join them into one PDF or shrink them for a form, without uploading them.

DocIt is free to download on Google Play in 142 countries, including India, the US, UK, Canada and Australia.

Questions

Does DocIt sort my documents on its own?

No. It reads each document and suggests a name and type. You check them and pick the category and folder before you save.

Can my family see these documents on their own phones?

No. DocIt keeps documents on one phone. You can mark whose each document is, but there is no sharing between phones. You can share a single document out when someone needs it.

Can I bring in documents I already have?

Yes. Import photos and PDFs from your gallery or files, or share them into DocIt from another app. A password-protected PDF, such as an e-Aadhaar, opens once you enter its password.

What if I delete something by mistake?

Deleted documents stay in Recently deleted for 30 days, still encrypted. You can restore them from there.
