How to use DocIt

One short how-to for each thing DocIt does. Stuck? Write to hello@docit.one.

Scan a document

Tap + and then Scan a document. The first time, your phone downloads Google’s scanner once; after that it works offline. Hold the page flat in good light. DocIt finds the edges for you, and you can crop, turn, add a filter or clean up marks. You can scan up to 20 pages at a time.

On the next screen, check the name, number and expiry date DocIt suggests, say what it is (and whose it is, if you have added family members with DocIt Plus), then tap Save. Several pages save as one PDF; a single page saves as a picture.

Add a photo or PDF you already have

Tap + and pick Phone gallery, Files or Google Drive. You can also share a photo or PDF into DocIt from another app: tap Share there and pick DocIt.

Turn photos into one PDF

Tap + and then Photos to PDF. Pick the photos from your gallery or Files (JPG, PNG, HEIC or WebP, up to 30). Drag them into order, turn or remove any, tap Add more if you need to, then tap Make PDF and save it.

Merge PDFs

In the Docs tab, open a list, then long-press a document or tap Select. Pick two or more PDFs or photos and tap Merge. Set the order, then save the merged document. Your originals stay as they are.

Edit or sign a PDF

Open a PDF in DocIt and tap Edit PDF. You can highlight or underline, add text, draw, and sign (draw your signature or use a picture of it). Pages lets you turn, delete or reorder pages, and Crop trims them. Tap Save, or Save as a copy to keep the original too. It all happens on your phone.

You can’t change words that are already in the PDF; you can add text on top.

Open a password-protected PDF (e-Aadhaar, e-PAN)

Add the PDF as usual. DocIt says “This PDF is locked”. Type the password and tap Unlock. DocIt uses the password once to unlock it on your phone and never saves it. Not sure of the password? For e-Aadhaar, see Aadhaar card download. For e-PAN, see PAN card and e-PAN.

You can also tap Save it locked and unlock it later from the document page.

Get a reminder before something expires

When you save a document with an expiry date, DocIt asks “Remind you before it runs out?”. Tap Remind me and allow notifications. You can also turn on Phone reminders in the You tab, under Reminders.

DocIt reminds you 30, 7 and 1 day before the date.

Copy an ID number from the wallet

Your ID cards sit at the top of the Home tab once you save them as an ID type (Aadhaar, PAN, passport, licence) with Whose is it set to You (the default). Swipe to the card you need and tap Copy to copy its number. Tap the card to open the document.

Organise in folders

In the Docs tab, tap New folder under Folders, or open a category and tap Add folder. Folders can go three levels deep. To move a document, open it and tap Move.

Keep the family’s documents

Adding family members is part of DocIt Plus. Once you have added someone, DocIt asks whose each document is when you save it. To add someone, go to the Cover tab and tap Add person. Each person gets their own page with the documents saved for them.

Lost your wallet?

Go to the Cover tab and tap Lost wallet. DocIt lists the next step for each card and document you saved, such as blocking a card with your bank or locking Aadhaar fingerprint use on UIDAI’s site. It also writes a summary for a police or loss report, with the numbers masked, which you can share. DocIt can only list what you saved; it doesn’t block anything for you.

In India? Our lost wallet checklist covers blocking cards, the police report and replacing each ID.

Copy the text from a scan or PDF

Open the document and tap ⋯ at the top right, then Copy text. Select the part you need, or tap Copy all. DocIt reads printed text in English and other Latin-script languages.

Make a file smaller (100 KB to 1 MB)

Open the document and tap ⋯ at the top right, then Make it smaller. Pick 100 KB, 200 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB. Then share it, save it to your phone, or keep the smaller copy in DocIt. The pages become pictures, so the text in the smaller file can’t be selected.

Save PDF pages as JPG

Open the PDF and tap ⋯ at the top right, then Save pages as pictures. Each page becomes a JPG you can share.

Split a PDF

Open the PDF and tap ⋯ at the top right, then Split PDF. Split every page, or type ranges like 1-2, 3-5. Each part is saved as a new document; the original stays.

Put both sides of an ID card on one page

Tap + and then Photos to PDF. Pick exactly two photos, the front and the back, and turn on the switch ID card: both sides on one page. DocIt puts both sides on one page.

Crop all pages at once

In Edit PDF, tap Crop, set the crop on one page, then tap Apply to all pages.

Get back a document you deleted

Deleted documents stay in Recently deleted for 30 days, then they are gone. In the Docs tab, scroll the shortcuts to Deleted (it shows once something is deleted), tap the document, then Restore, or Delete forever.

Share or send a document

Open the document and tap Share, then pick the app, for example WhatsApp or email.
